Donal and Helen (O’Rourke) Spaulding of Cortland NY are celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary on March 5, 2013. The couple was married in 1963 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Salem, North Carolina.
Both Don and Helen are graduates of St. Mary’s School in Cortland, the Class of 1962 and 1963, respectively. Don’s retired after working for many years in the Cortland area. Don served in the United States Army from 1962-1966, and during that time was stationed in Warrenton, Virginia as a specialist. He also spent time stationed in Turkey, where he took photos near the Black Sea before returning back to Cortland with his family. After working with his father for years at Spaulding & Son Studio, Don purchased the business and moved it from Groton Ave. to a Tompkins St. location. Don then left photography to work as a shift supervisor for many years at Pall Trinity in Cortland. He wound down his career working at St. Mary’s Church in Cortland, and is currently serving as a legislator for Cortland County for District #6, Ward 6.
Helen worked for years as a dental and office assistant at the Cortland Orthodontic office and with Dr. James V. Cocuzzi at his practice. She recently retired from food service at SUNY Cortland. Helen’s life of faith as an active parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Cortland played a key role in her greatest achievement, which was raising seven wonderful children: Stephen (Elaine) Spaulding of Deposit, NY; Robert (Mary) Spaulding of Cortland, NY; Jon David (Samantha) Spaulding of Oswego, NY; Theresa (Mike) Nguyen of Bethesda, MD; Kathleen (Tim) Baker of Clay, NY; Timothy (Sabrina) Spaulding of Shapleigh, ME, and Beth (Justin) Stoner of Clay, NY and have thus been blessed with 7 grandchildren.
Don is currently serving as Cortland County legislator, District #6, Ward 6. Helen is a Catholic Charities volunteer and serves on committees for CAPCO and Head Start. She is also involved with Cortland County Hospice.
Don and Helen were surprised by their children with a celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary at the Red Dragon in Cortland. Surrounded by their family and closest friends from near and far, a PowerPoint slide show of pictures old and new preceded a wonderful dinner celebration. As is always the case for a Spaulding family gathering, a good time was had by all.
