PUBLIC NOTICE

U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers Seeking Public Comment on Proposed Plan for the Nike Anti-Aircraft Missile Battery BU-51/52 Launch Area, Hamburg, Erie County, New York

Public Comment Period
February 15, 2023 - March 15, 2023

Public Meeting
February 22, 2023, 6:00 PM

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has completed a Remedial Investigation (RI) and a Proposed Plan (PP) for the Nike Anti-Aircraft Missile Battery BU-51/52 Launch Area (Nike BU-51/52 Launch Area) Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS), located 2720 Lakeview Road, Hamburg, New York. The public is invited to provide feedback on the PP for the Nike Launch Area FUDS, and USACE is conducting a public meeting where the public can learn more information.
During the Cold War, the U.S. Army deployed Nike anti-aircraft missile facilities around the country to protect population centers and important industrial and military installations. The Nike BU-51/52 Launch Area FUDS was one of these facilities. It was operational from 1956 to 1961 and contained 60 Nike Ajax supersonic missiles stored in six underground silos. The property was transferred to the Town of Hamburg (Town), New York in 1968 after removal of the missiles and associated equipment, and is the current location of the Town Highway Department facilities. The property is also the location of the former Town Landfill, which was in operation from 1970 until 1984, when it was closed and subsequently capped. The RI was conducted from 2020 to 2021. The PP summarizes the RI and proposes a preferred approach of No Action.

The PP and associated documents are available for public review online at:
https://www.nae.usace.army.mil/Missions/Projects-Topics/Former-NIKE-Site-Hamburg-New-York/

The Project Information Repository is located at:
Hamburg Public Library
102 Buffalo Street
Hamburg, NY 14075

The goal of gathering information through presentation of the PP and the public comment period is to better understand the community's awareness of the PP, which is based upon the RI and previous investigations and studies, and to determine if the public agrees with the PP recommended action presented by the USACE. Public comments will be used in development of a Public Responsiveness Summary that will guide USACE's future actions in coordination with the community.

A virtual public meeting will be held to discuss the PP on February 22, 2023, starting at 6:00 PM. Interested members of the public are invited to participate in the virtual meeting via the following WebEx link: https://usace1.webex.com/join/cenae-pa or via phone at
